Types of Hashtags

You can split hashtags up into different types:

One of the first things to ensure when you use hashtags is that you don’t leave any spaces in them. If you do, only the part of your hashtag before the space will count. You can use both letters and numbers, but no punctuation, apart from the leading #-symbol. You can use hashtags anywhere within a social media post, although usually within a caption or comment on an Instagram post.

Don’t go mad on your hashtag usage, even on Instagram, where you are allowed 30 hashtags. People find messages with hashtags every second word annoying to read. It is usually a good idea to keep your hashtags short and concise. The more characters in your hashtag, the more opportunity there is for error, and the less memorable a hashtag will be.

If you’re using lifestyle or event-based hashtags, don’t try to use rare or unusual terms. People won't search for them, making them of little value. On the other hand, you may achieve poor results from using broad generic hashtags. Your posts may turn up in searches, but they may be swamped by all the other posts also using those hashtags. Also, people are more likely to search for relatively specific terms, rather than broad generic ones.

Don’t use hashtags for the sake of using them. They have to add genuine value to a post.

Hashtag usage on LinkedIn is similar to that on Facebook. You can use them, but restrict yourself to no more than one or two per post. You might increase this to three if you're posting long-form content.
